June is Pride Month

Image celebrating Pride Month with a rainbow background and text.
Pride Month, honored throughout the month of June in the United States, is a time reserved for commemorating the LGBTQIA civil rights movement and uplifting the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people. Pride presents an opportunity for families to gather and show support for our loved ones. Pride Month is an opportunity to teach kids about what it means to be part of the LGBTQIA community, the history of the celebration, and how to have fun. The word "Pride" was actually originally an acronym that stood for Personal Rights in Defense and Education, an organization started in 1966 to fight for equal rights for LGBTQIA people in California. Pride creates a safe space for everyone to feel connected and experience a sense of community. Locally, Pride Month is celebrated with a festival on June 19th in Cortland at Courthouse Park hosted by the Cortland LGBTQ Center. See image below for more details on this year's festival.
