The "Wedding" of Q and U
Posted February 16, 2012
Homer Elementary School recently celebrated a Vegas-style wedding of Q and U performed by Elvis impersonator, Principal Mike Falls. All of the Homer Elementary kindergarten classes attended this wedding as kings and queens. It was the grand finale of "Q Week." This memorable event teaches the lesson that q and u always stay together in words like quiet!
We thank kindergarten teacher Toby Clark for the idea and organization as well as the many people who helped her decorate and create materials.

D.A. Book Club
Posted January 24, 2012
Members of the D.A. (Dumbledore’s Army) Book Club gathered recently. The book club was named after a school club in Harry Potter. Marina Pizzola and Kindrah Kohne started the book club as a book interest group in 2011, and Adrianna P. and Molly G.continued it. In this book club, we don’t read a mandatory book each week; we each read a different book and then give our opinions and recommendations. We meet every other Tuesday in Mrs. George’s room.
Fishing Phonics
Posted January 23, 2012
These students are using a fishing pole to catch fish. If the picture on the fish starts with the sound of "F" they keep the fish, all others are thrown away. Hands on activities like this are one way kindergarten students develop their phonemic awareness skills. They learn to hear the sound of F and identify orally stated words that start with that sound (fish, fox, fan, etc). In addition to isolating the beginning sound, they began constructing entire words by blending together each of the sounds (f-a-n).
