HS - Homer Girl's Lax Susan G. Komen for the Cure®

On Saturday May 17th the Homer School District Girl's Lacrosse Teams will be participating in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Currently we have 34 particpants and have raised over $1,000.00.

This race is to help raise money to help support the fight against breast cancer.
HS - Help the Soldiers - Help the Kids

Help the Soldiers - Help the kids

A Homer High School Career and Financial Management Project

Marilee Comerford's Career and Financial Management class has been writing weekly to Major Roberta Comerford who is deployed with the 104th MP unit to Camp Bucca, Iraq.

The MP unit is involved in a project to help the Iraqis reopen their schools. "In the southern Iraq town of Safwan, there is a mission taking place that has many obstacles. Safety is a concern. Basic utilities are unreliable. Poverty is the norm. The 104th MP unit has identified a number of ways in which they can have a positive impact on the community while at the same time ensuring that the intended recipients are actually benefited. The unit would like to aid a few of the local schools with some basic materials. The local schools do not have the means to purchase and transport materials needed to provide a proper learning environment."

The class is seeking donations of basic school supplies to help the 104th achieve their goal. Supplies will be collected at all the district schools and then will be sent to the 104th MP unit in Iraq to be distributed to the children. As MAJ Comerford writes "These kids have nothing. Anything will be more than they have right now. The teachers use sticks to write in the sand in order to teach the lesson."

SGM Jay Kaczor, MAJ Roberta Comerford, LTC Ronnie Ridner, MAJ Lori Renwick, CSM Justin Lenz of the 104th MP unit

Camp Bucca

Maintained by the United States military, Camp Bucca is the largest prison in the world and is also a holding facility for security detainees. Originally the camp was built by the British forces and named Camp Freddy. After being taken over by the U.S. military in 2003, the camp was renamed after Ronald Bucca, a soldier with the 800th Military Police Brigade and NYC Fire Marshall who died in the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Safwan

Safwan is a crumbling, poverty stricken home for approximately 25,000 people. Formerly a border crossing town between Kuwait and Iraq, the town is slowly being rebuilt after the destruction left by the Iraqi War in 1991. Once famous for its locally grown tomatoes, the area is now considered too contaminated to produce edible crops.

Donate today

Whether you would like to make a simple monetary donation or donate supplies, you may be assured that 100% of your donation will go to the 104th to be distributed to the children. Your donation, no matter how large or small, will help our troops foster goodwill between themselves and the community in which they are working. Help bring a brighter future to those in need.

Requested items

I am writing to invite you to an orientation meeting for parents and freshmen. We will meet in the auditorium at the High School on August 29th, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. By this date, many freshmen will have met with Mrs. Fairchild for their small group discussions and building tours. Our intent on the 29th will be to present additional information on academic, logistical, and social issues. Please review the agenda below and set the date aside. It is our hope that most or all of our parents will attend. We anticipate very little repetition between the information presented in small groups (Mrs. Fairchild) and the information we plan to share on the 29th. For this reason, we recommend freshmen accompany their parents on the 29th. It is our hope that having both parents and students hear the same things at the same time will promote discussion of important issues, perhaps as early as the ride home that evening. Some of you will be unavailable on the 29th. For that reason, I have included the phone numbers of our presenters. They will be happy to answer questions you may have.

HS - Letter to HS Parents for 3/23/07

The entire Homer community has experienced the loss of two individuals, Alissa and Sally Churchill, whose lives and personalities touched many people and whose spirits will be forever remembered. As we support each other through our grief we must keep in mind how our children are dealing with their sorrow, especially as teenagers who are experiencing the personal loss of a close friend or fellow student for perhaps the first time. Friday will be a celebration of the lives of Alissa and Sally Churchill, a final good-bye, a mourning of our loss, and a time of fellowship as people remember with fond memories how their own lives have been touched and blessed through their relationships with the deceased.

We would encourage all of you to be there for your own son or daughter through this time of difficulty. The Homer High School will be in session and classroom routines will be maintained as smoothly as possible. Parents who acknowledge their son or daughter's need to leave school for the funeral are asked to communicate with the school through a written note that their child should bring to school on Friday morning. Then we ask that you, as the parent, come into the school to sign out your child and support them emotionally throughout the rest of the day.
