HS - Oklahoma! comes to Homer

The HS Musical Theater Department is presenting Oklahoma! Thursday-Saturday, March 4-6 at 7pm in the HS Auditorium. It's a fun family show that is responsible for restarting the popularity of the musical theater genre after the Great Depression. Oklahoma! is a romantic comedy where cowboys and farmers vie for the girls affections, as does a Persian peddler and a surly hired hand. Set in the Wild West, it features lively dance numbers, memorable songs, inventive lighting (by Dan Camp) and a dream sequence enhanced by a very creative video (by Homer HS Video club).

Tickets will be on sale in the Music Building (749-1258) from 9am-5pm March 1-5 and at the door. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for students/seniors, and $25 for families of any size.

The JH Blue Pride Skate Night will be Saturday, February 27th from 6-7:30 p.m. at the JM McDonald Sports Complex in Cortland. Bring the family to the first ever event. DJ Eric Mulvihill from WXHC will play music and there will be a 50/50 raffle and a "Chuck a Puck" competition. The cost is $5 per person with a $2 skate rental fee. Hope to see you there.

The Homer Athletic Booster Club meets the third Tuesday of every month in the High School cafeteria. Parents of athletes are strongly encouraged to attend, to act as a liaison between their child's team and the club. Our main fundraising efforts include the concession stand at the stadium and the annual Lucky Calendar sale. The Booster Club uses the funds raised from these efforts to fund many team requests. As the concession stand is vital to our club we are always looking for parent volunteers to work in the stand. Interested parents should contact Cheryl Carboine at ccarboine@homercentral.org . Lastly, if anyone would be interested in the records of the Homer Athletic Booster Club - they are available upon request.

The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is offering a summer camp for youth 12 to 17 years old. Applications must be postmarked no later that February 6, 2010. The fee is $325 and more information can be found on the website http://www.dec.ny.gov/education/29.html

The Camp Experience

At DEC environmental education camps, campers experience a balance of environmental education, sportsman education and outdoor fun. Games, lessons and hands-on activities teach kids about forests, water quality and other aspects of nature. Swimming, hiking and canoeing are on the agenda, too, as campers learn new outdoor skills. Campers come away with a life-long passion for nature and a dedication to stewardship of our natural resources.

HS - High School Regents Week!

Dear Parents:

As our first semester draws to a close we have a need to administer local and state exams. The high school will be operating on a modified schedule on Tuesday, January 26^th and Wednesday, January 27^th, 2010. Only those students taking an exam will be required to be in attendance on those two days. Please be advised that all juniors taking the English 11 Regents exam will need to be present both Tuesday and Wednesday, as this is a two-day exam. Monday, February 1^st is a scheduled Staff Development Day and students should not be in attendance on Monday unless scheduled for a Regents or RCT exam. The high school will return to regularly scheduled classes on Tuesday, February 2^nd, 2010. During the January exam period, BOCES will continue to run regularly scheduled classes. BOCES students are expected to attend BOCES classes on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday unless they have a scheduled Regents/RCT, mid-term, or a final. Please make note of the modified transportation schedule which appears on the reverse side of this letter.

The high school guidance counselors and various teachers will be presenting information about freshman course selection. If parents are unable to attend the evening session, the 9^th grade guidance counselor will present the information on Wednesday morning. Parents will be able to pick up the course selection form containing recommendations from 8^th grade teachers at either presentation. The high school guidance counselors will also be talking to students during science classes on January 25th.

JH - National Recognition for a Local 8th Grader

Mary Cope and her Beagle, Katie, will be competing in a Dog Agility Invitational for the American Kennel Club (AKC) December 12 and 13 in Long Beach, CA. This is a sport where the dog and handler navigate their way through an obstacle course while being judged on speed and accuracy. Katie is the number one ranked Beagle in America. Approximately 900 handlers will be competing at the Invitational and only 2 of the 900 are under the age of 18. This makes Mary's accomplishment all the more phenomenal. AKC finalist will be aired on Animal Planet sometime in February. Good Luck Mary and Katie.

Homer Junior High will be conducting Parent-Teacher conferences on:

Thursday, November 19, 2009 from 3:00 p.m. through 6:00 p.m.

Friday, November 20, 2009 from 8:00 a.m. through 3:00 p.m.

Attached is a conference request form that must be returned by Monday, November 16^th, 2009. Conferences are scheduled on a first come, first served basis. We will do our best to accommodate you with the teacher and time of your choice. However, staffing and time restraints may not make this possible. The more times and staff you select will increase our ability to accommodate requests.

We are asking that your child accompany you to the conference. We believe that your child needs to be an active participant in his/her education. Attendance at the conference helps assure this and will prevent any misunderstanding about what is discussed.

Students will bring letters home on Wednesday, November 18^th, indicating your conference time. If you don’t receive a letter after requesting a conference, please ask your child for the letter before contacting the guidance office at 749-1135. EL - Homer Elementary School Healthy Steps Program

This year as a part of the Elementary school's regular walking program we added a Healthy Steps component. The Healthy Steps program was a 10 day span of time in October where students and their familes could record all the walking they did both at school and at home. Family walking logs were sent home for familes to record all the miles they were walking. We have calculated the totals for the family walking logs and students walking cards at school and have found that as a school we walked 1,533 miles!! We have sent our totals into the Healthy Steps database and are waiting to hear how we did compared to other schools our size. We will keep you updated and in the mean time keep up the walking!

HS - Student Selected as Alternate for All-State Band

Senior Shelby Withiam has been chosen as a flute alternate for the All-State Band festival being held in Rochester this December. She was selected based on her perfect score of 100 on her level 6 flute solo at last May’s NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) solo festival held in Auburn. Students are selected from across New York State based on their spring solo festival NYSSMA scores. Flutes, saxophones, and percussion are annually the most competitive. Congratulations Shelby!

ATTENTION GRADE 8 STUDENTS AND FAMILIES

Grade 8 Foreign Language Proficiency Exam

We have a unique situation this year that will have our grade 8 foreign language students coming to school after the official last day of student attendance to take the state scheduled proficiency exam. The exam will be given on Monday, June 22 at 8 a.m. The district will provide transportation to school at the regularly scheduled time and will bus students’ home beginning at 11:30 a.m. All students should plan to be in homeroom by 7:45 a.m.

In most cases, students will complete the exam after two hours and be available for parent pick after calling home. Parents are encouraged to pick up their children early to avoid lengthy delays. Students may be picked up in the turn around near the JH entrance. Students walking home will need a note from a parent to be released early. Please contact Mr. Turck with any questions.

The Homer Athletic Booster Club meets the third Tuesday of every month in the High School cafeteria. Parents of athletes are strongly encouraged to attend, to act as a liaison between their child's team and the club. Our main fundraising efforts include the concession stand at the stadium and the annual Lucky Calendar sale. The Booster Club uses the funds raised from these efforts to fund many team requests. As the concession stand is vital to our club we are always looking for parent volunteers to work in the stand. Interested parents should contact Cheryl Carboine at ccarboine@homercentral.org. The next meeting of the After Prom Party Committee is scheduled for February 25^th at 7:00 in the High School Cafeteria.

The After Prom Party will be held at the J.M. McDonald Sports Complex from midnight until 3:30 a.m. following the prom. The party is designed as a fun, safe and substance free way to finish off prom night. Parents are needed to help plan, fundraise, decorate, chaperone and bake for this event. The high school guidance counselors and various teachers will be presenting information about freshman course selection. If parents are unable to attend the evening session, the 9^th grade guidance counselor will also present the information on Wednesday morning. Parents will be able to pick up the course selection form containing recommendations from 8^th grade teachers at either presentation.

Dennis Stratton, a college admissions officer, will speak with parents to discuss the criteria that colleges look at when making admissions determinations. He will also talk about concerns regarding social networking websites such as MySpace and Facebook.

Dear Parents:

Homer Junior High will be conducting Parent-Teacher conferences on:

Thursday, November 13, 2008 from 3:00 p.m. through 6:00 p.m.

and

Friday, November 14, 2008 from 8:00 a.m. through 3:00 p.m.

Attached is a conference request form that must be returned by Thursday, November 6^th, 2008. Conferences are scheduled on a first come, first served basis. We will do our best to accommodate you with the teacher and time of your choice. However, staffing and time restraints may not make this possible. The more times and staff you select will increase our ability to accommodate requests.

Students will bring letters home on Wednesday, November 12^th, indicating your conference time. If you don’t receive a letter after requesting a conference, please ask your child for the letter before contacting the guidance office at 749-1135. You may also email Peggy Strauf at pstrauf@homercentral.org regarding questions concerning conference appointments.

JH - Road Closures affecting Jr. High

Clinton and Warren Streets in the village of Homer will be closed beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday, October 15th through Thursday, October 16th. Work crews will be conducting maintenance on the rail road tracks which cross both streets. Only local traffic will be allowed during this time. If you will be delivering/picking up your child from the Intermediate/Junior High School on these days, please plan to use Route 281 to the western end of Clinton Street. Walkers who need to cross the tracks should plan to use an alternate route.

Five Strategies That Work

To Prevent Underage Drinking and Drug Use

Take Your Teen on Adventures - Alcohol and drugs give teens a thrill, a rush. Show them that they can "go to the limit" in ways that are healthy. Take them sky-diving, roller-coaster riding, white water-rafting, or mountain climbing, Ok, these may be a bit extreme but there are many ways to have fun and excitement that don’t involve alcohol and other drugs. Do something. Push yourself and your teen out of your comfort zones. When you do this, you train the brain to get "high" naturally and not using some artificial substance.

Make the Tough Call - It is not easy to check up on our teens but it is important to do so. When they go somewhere, make the tough call to the place where they are going. Get to know your teen's friends' parents. Find out about their supervision and what are their rules and guidelines for parties or gatherings. If their rules are not consistent with what you believe, don't let your teen go there.

Talk about Consequences - There are many negative consequences to drinking and other drug use. Discuss these with your teen regularly. Addictive substances...
- create dependency ("I want more")
- damage the brain and cause poor judgment
- poison the blood
- can lead to unprotected sex (AIDS, pregnancy, STDs)
- can induce vomiting and sickness
- can lead to arrest. Legal fees can run as high as $10,000 and a police record will follow your teen into college and adulthood
- can lead to a loss of trust and privileges with family and friends.
- can lead to suspension in school, sports and other activities.

Set Clear and Manageable Rules and Guidelines - First and foremost, set a policy of NO drinking and other drug use. Be very clear about this. Research has shown that if you are not clear, your teen will interpret your "lack of clarity" as permission to use. Other rules may include:
- not riding in a car with someone who has been drinking or using other drugs
- coming home at a certain time
- checking in by cell phone at certain times
- offering rewards for good behavior
- introducing you to friends and parents of those friends.
Use consequences and state them in advance, not at the time of the mistake. "If you do such and such, these things will happen."

Listen, Listen, and Listen - Teens face a tough world these days. They have lots of feelings about all this but don’t want to show it because it is not "cool." Flare-ups, however, inevitably come our way. Welcome these. Don't get defensive. Listen to their struggles and keep the lines of honest communication open. You need to listen to their feelings of anger, sadness, and embarrassment. Don't take it personally if directed at you. Your teen is trying to figure his or her life and you need to help them do this. If you blame or yell at them they will stop sharing their struggles. Tell them you love them no matter what.
