Homer Nurse Practitioner Program to Provide Convenience for Families

The Homer Central School District is continuing a partnership with Guthrie Family Medicine that will provide students with weekly access to a Nurse Practitioner this school year.

Anna Wright is a Nurse Practitioner with Guthrie Family
Medicine. This year, Homer parents can opt their child
in to weekly access to a Nurse Practitioner in school.

The program provides a number of medical services that are otherwise unavailable in the district. Services a nurse practitioner can provide include the ability to attain a physical, receive a diagnosis for an illness, and/or order necessary medication without a student needing to go see a doctor.

“This partnership ran as a pilot program last year and it was a huge success,” Guthrie Family Medicine Nurse Practitioner Anna Wright said. “I was able to see a bunch of students for physicals who decided to join a sport late or were having difficulty scheduling a doctor’s appointment.”

With the challenges of getting an appointment to see a doctor on short or late notice, Wright hopes that the program is providing convenience while also easing stress for families in the district.

“Our hope is that it’s very convenient for parents and families,” Wright said. “We all know the stress of getting a call from the nurse’s office and trying to get in to see your doctor. Hopefully by me being here I can assess your child, give a diagnosis and call in medication for him or her if needed.”

Wright says parents who would like to take advantage of the program need to file the appropriate paperwork and the program will be available immediately.

“It’s an opt-in form,” Wright said. “If you want your child to be able to see one of us and participate in this program, you will need to sign the consent form and return it to the school.”

Consent forms are available on the Health Services Page of our website and in the main offices of all Homer schools. Students or parents can turn completed forms in to the nurse or main office at their child’s school to opt-in for participation.

Students who opt-in to the program will have weekly access to a Nurse Practitioner at the following times:

Homer Elementary School – Tuesday Mornings
Homer Intermediate School – Wednesday Mornings
Homer Junior High School – Wednesday Mornings
Homer High School – Wednesday Afternoons
