One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is a strong foundation for literacy! And that is the goal of this fundraising effort: putting books in the hands of children living in the Homer school community.
By partnering with the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, the Homer Education Foundation is able to send books directly to the homes of Homer Central School District pre-schoolers each month, from birth until they become five years old. We can foster a love of reading, strengthen family-child relationships, and contribute to a foundation of school readiness with this simple but powerful gesture.
For every $1 we spend on postage--our financial part of the literacy partnership--the Dolly Parton Imagination Library Foundation spends about $5 on a book. Children who participate in the Imagination Library from birth to age five will have a personal library of sixty hardcover, quality books to call their own by the time they enter kindergarten. We want all of Homer's youngest children to be among the lucky boys and girls who receive the gift of books delivered free of charge to their home each month. With help from the community we will reach our goal.
In a nutshell, it costs about $30 a year to send a book a month to each child and we believe it is possible to reach as many as 600 Homer children. $30 X 600 = $18,000.
