Homer Junior High Library Information Center About the HJH Library Information Center
The Homer Junior High School serves nearly 400 students in seventh and eighth grades. The Library Information Program in the Homer Central School District K-12... The Skills Curriculum for the Homer Central Schools Library Information Program is extensive. In fact, in addition to library organization concepts and library use skills, many skills taught in the Library Information Program support, reinforce and enhance the Language Arts Curriculum. In the areas of literature appreciation, reading, and library use skills, we teach many concepts, including: literary concepts such as character, plot, setting, story structure; genres such as folktales, fairy tales, fables, tall tales, myths, legends, epics, nursery rhymes, poetry; parts of a book, like spine, cover, title page, index; proper book care; arrangement and use of the library; differences between fiction and nonfiction; listening skills, as well as author/illustrator studies. In order for our students to function in an information-based society, they need to possess information-problem-solving skills, including the abilities to find, evaluate and synthesize information. To address these needs, the Library Information Program heavily emphasizes the teaching of research and information use skills, such as: alphabetizing; keyword searching; note taking; skimming; scanning; outlining; summarizing; using an index, glossary, and table of contents; evaluating information; using dictionaries; preparing bibliographies; drawing inferences from clues; locating information by call numbers, indexes, guide words, and subheadings; sequencing information; and expanding or narrowing an information search.
