Homer Junior High - Awards and Honors
Students are recognized in many ways for their special gifts and talents.
They can hold offices or be a member of the student council, work in the bookstore,
join a school club, or participate in band, chorus, or athletic teams. The
honor roll is published in the Cortland Standard after each marking period,
and there is an awards assembly the last week of school. Awards students can
strive to win include the following:
Grade 7
Harley M. Albro Award
for the student who has exhibited exemplary standards of character.
Principal's Award
for the student who deserves special recognition for high qualities of citizenship,
leadership, and scholarship.
Veterans' Award
for the student who has shown the greatest improvement in individual effort
and citizenship, as well as scholastic attainment.
Grade 8
Mark D. Baldwin Memorial Award
for the student who has best exemplified the motto, "Let each become all that
he is capable of being."
Community Service Award
for the student who has shown outstanding community service and citizenship.
WG Crandall Award
for the student who has earned the highest average in academic subjects and
maintained a record of good conduct during the year.
Helen Howell Cottrell Home & Careers Award
for the student who has shown the greatest interest in home & career
skills through project work, attitude, character, and scholarship.
Kevin DeMaso Memorial Award
for the student who has exhibited exemplary standards of character.
HTA Awards
for French, Spanish, and German
Health Award
for the student who most personifies all dimensions of health and wellness.
Jane E. Proper Prize
for the student who has shown the greatest progress in his classroom work
during the year.
School Service Award
for the student who has shown outstanding community service and citizenship.
Grade 7 and/or 8
Art Contests, Art Show, and Permanent Art Collection
Drama Club Award
for the student who has contributed the most in time, attitude, and energy
to the production of the junior high plays.
Guidance Award
for outstanding averages.
HTA John F. Durkee Memorial Award
for the student on each team that best exhibits and practices the qualities
of good character.
Essay Contest Winners recognized.
Music Awards for instrumental and vocal students.
Physical Education Awards
Shawn Ryan Memorial Award
for the student who has shown incredible determination to achieve success
in school and life.
Science Awards
for the students who have shown enthusiasm for science, an aptitude for the
subject matter, and has exhibited a curiosity for learning science.
John L. Sciera Lacrosse Award
for the student who has the greatest dedication to the sport of lacrosse.
Sennightly Award
for the student who has learned the joy of reading for pleasure both in and out
of school.
Spelling Bee Champions
Ruth Stoker Math Award
for the math students who have shown the greatest improvement in individual
effort and scholastic attainment.
Teachers' Awards for Outstanding Accomplishment
for the student on each team for exceptional accomplishments during the school year.
Jerrene Woods Art Award
for the student who has shown a zest for life and a love of art.
